Pokemon GO players expressed their frustration regarding the latest update to Niantic’s mobile game, criticizing the company’s decision to offer a new upgrade linked to postcards. Niantic regularly publishes updates for its mobile game, providing Pokemon GO players with a large variety of new activities and rare creatures to capture.

Postcards have been a central social feature in Pokemon GO for years, being associated with the gifts players can send each other. When they interact with a Pokestop, players can receive a gift to send one of their friends and a postcard with a picture of the Pokestop. Pokemon GO introduced the Postcard Book in December 2021 so that players can collect these postcards and keep a memory from the Pokestops they visited or the ones their friends sent them with a gift. Postcards don’t have any other utility than showing a sneak peek at a real-life location, providing no in-game advantage.

The latest Pokemon GO update introduced a new option in the in-game shop, allowing players to increase the maximum number of postcards they can save by 50. This storage expansion comes at the cost of 100 PokeCoins, which amounts to $0.99. Players can also use their Pokemon to get Poke Coins for free in Pokemon GO by sending them to defend gyms. Despite not being a huge expanse, this postcard storage expansion was deemed worthless by many players, who would rather spend their PokeCoins on more useful elements than collect more postcards.

Pokemon GO players made fun of this postcard storage upgrade, wondering why Niantic opted for such an update instead of offering the highly anticipated option to increase the number of eggs players can carry in Pokemon GO. Those who enjoy collecting postcards asked for a better sorting feature, so that they can sort postcards by name to easily spot duplicates. Others asked Niantic for a sticker book to collect all the Pokemon GO stickers they receive with the gifts and postcards.

Besides this update to postcards, Pokemon GO regularly brings new content for players to enjoy. Niantic recently announced the Rising Shadow event starting on May 22 and the introduction of Team Rocket Shadow Raids in Pokemon GO, with new powerful bosses to defeat in hopes to get a new Pokemon partner. The company announced the upcoming addition of Master Balls in Pokemon GO, guaranteeing a catch no matter the targeted Pokemon. While these new features received mixed feedback from the community, at least Niantic continues providing regular updates to keep Pokemon GO alive.

Pokemon GO is available now on Android and iOS.
