Feebas is known for being a shabby-looking fish that evolves into the beautiful Milotic. Unlike Magikarp, Feebas are incredibly rare and would only spawn on certain “tiles” back in Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald and Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum. While it’s still rare in Pokemon Scarlet/Violet, finding and catching Feebas isn’t nearly as challenging as it was back in Generation 3-4.

Prior to The Teal Mask, Feebas and Milotic were unobtainable in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. Trainers hoping to catch one for evolving it into Milotic or just to complete the Pokedex will find out that Feebas only spawns in one area in Kitakami. Those that want Milotic will need to evolve Feebas via one of two ways

How to Get Feebas

Before Feebas can be caught in the wild, players are going to need Koraidon/Miraidon’s ability to swim. If Shiny Hunting Feebas, then it’s recommended to have a Pokemon that can fight on/in the water that has a type effectiveness over Water-type (ex: Wattrel is an Electric/Flying-type that can battle on water).

Feebas can be found swimming in Oni Mountain. Players are going to want to fly to Crystal Pool, and cross the bridge to a slanted hill. At the back of this hill is a cavern entrance that leads inside Oni Mountain. Drop down into the first room, and there will be a Kitakami Ogre Clan trainer. Ignore them and take the path down to another drop.

This time, the player character and Korai/Miraidon will land in a body of water. Follow the stream to a room with a Whiscash. Defeat the Whiscash, as it’s a Fixed Spawn and will hinder too many Feebas from appearing.

Since Feebas is rare, it would do trainers some good to make a sandwich that has an Encounter Power: Water meal effect. Ingredients such as Cucumbers and Curry Powder have Water and Encounter effects.

Feebas will flee and dive underwater if players get too close, so send out a Pokemon to battle with ZR-button (not R-button). Players should not Auto-Battle Feebas unless they’re Shiny Hunting it.

Remember that because Feebas is quite rare, it’s likely players will see other Water-type (in this case, Barboach) before they find a single Feebas. Have a Pokemon Auto-Battle to clear out the Barboach.

Use a Quick Ball on the first turn, and if that fails, use Net Balls or Dive Balls. Net Balls have a higher chance of catching Bug or Water-type Pokemon, whereas Dive Balls have a higher catch rate if the Pokemon is on/in water.

Those that aren’t having any luck finding Feebas can try to find it in 3-star Tera Raids around Kitakami.

How to Evolve Feebas (How to Get Milotic)

pokemon scarlet violet prism scale

To evolve Feebas into Milotic, players need to have Feebas holding a Prism Scale, then trade it to initiate the evolution. Players will get a Prism Scale as one of the Kitakami Dex Rewards for catching 140 Kitakami Pokemon. There’s also a Prism Scale at the far east of Fellhorn Gorge.

Players will need an Online Membership in order to trade. Once they have this, they can access the online features via the Poke Portal and start a Link Trade. Players can either trade with someone random using a Link Code, or they can set up their own Link Code and give it to a Friend. If trainers want the Milotic to have their Trainer ID, then they should trade with a friend instead.

How to Evolve Feebas without Trading

Another way to evolve Feebas into Milotic is by using Pokemon HOME and Pokemon Brilliant Diamond or Shining Pearl. This is a lengthier process and requires the use of another game, but it doesn’t require online membership. Here’s what to do:

  1. Catch Feebas in Scarlet/Violet, and place it in a PC Box.
  2. Close out of Scarlet/Violet and open Pokemon HOME on the Switch.
  3. In HOME, transfer the Feebas to either Brilliant Diamond (BD) or Shining Pearl (SP).
  4. Start up BD/SP, and fly to Hearthome City and go to the Poffin House.
  5. Create dry/blue poffins by mixing four different types of “dry” berries.
      1. A good recipe to use is: Oran, Razz, Wiki, and Chesto.
  6. Avoid spilling or burning the batter to make a “high-leveled” poffin, and then feed it to the transferred Feebas.
  7. Keep feeding Feebas until its *Beauty stat is maxed out, then level it up once to evolve it into Milotic.
  8. Place Milotic back in the PC Box, and then exit out of BD/SP.
  9. Go back into Pokemon HOME to get the Milotic from BD/SP back to Scarlet/Violet.

The Beauty stat’s increase will be influenced by Feebas’ Nature. If the Feebas loves “dry food,” then it’ll level quicker. If it dislikes it, then it’ll level slower. For example, a Modest-natured Feebas will grow quicker than an Adamant-natured Feebas.

Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet are available for Nintendo Switch.
